Without the tireless efforts of Conjunct volunteers, we would be nowhere near where we are today. They have been a driving force in strengthening social good organisations over these last five years and it’s inspiring to see how much work can get done when people band together!
Lewis Liu is the Volunteer of the Month – June 2017
Lewis has been a volunteer with Conjunct since 2013. Lewis first joined us as a Project Advisor, guiding a team of students in rethinking the customer service for Ling Kwang Home for senior citizens. Leveraging on his expertise gained in his years working for the government’s Public Service Division, Lewis went on to volunteer his time as a Workshop Designer, as well as a Facilitator for Scalathons. Lewis has been a vital part of some of the corporate engagements we put together. Known to be someone with excellent facilitation skills, his contribution to our work with corporates has been invaluable to us. His peers at Conjunct have always appreciated his participation in a brainstorm session and how he can clearly look at the intersection of things. Lewis has also helped us train our first set of facilitators for our scaled corporate programmes. We recently caught up with him, and here is a quick interview.
What work do you do outside of Conjunct Consulting?
I am a consultant for Sequoia Group, and I’ve been there for slightly over a year now. I help organisations to plan for the future and build better relationships with their stakeholders. Before that, I was working with the Singapore government for slightly more than four years in the Public Service Division.
How did you start volunteering with Conjunct?
I have a friend who at the time was also volunteering as a project advisor. She was telling me that she really enjoyed what she was doing and felt that she was really able to apply her skills, not only to the NGO but also to help students along with the project, and I found that quite interesting.
What struck you most about your first experience with Conjunct?
At Conjunct, I feel as though we are trying to connect everybody, when I say everybody I mean the non-profits, students who are passionate and want to help out, professionals utilising their skills for the greater good, for something better, and that was my impression of Conjunct at that time.
Why did you decide to continue volunteering with us rather than elsewhere?
Being able to learn more about Non-profits, connect Non-profits with Corporates for potential collaborations, and meeting like-minded, passionate volunteers. Volunteering with Conjunct also provides an opportunity for me to sharpen my skills, while at the same time to give back in a more meaningful and impactful manner.
Could you tell us more about yourself? What other interests and hobbies do you have outside work and Conjunct?
Could you tell us more about yourself? What other interests and hobbies do you have outside work and Conjunct? I adopted a dog 🙂 about a year ago, she’s a mongrel, and her name is Brownie! So during the weekends, I try to spend as much time with her and my wife.
What would you tell a prospective Conjunct project advisor/volunteer?
Whatever you do, always have the client and stakeholders in mind. So, for example, the non-profit, or the students, and think about what they need and what they want.
